Kéquetz

Kéquetz writes from the space between departure and return. The project belongs to Slovenian songwriter-producer Jure Kekec, whose move to New York turned geographical distance into both subject matter and method. Recorded through the perspective of someone newly foreign, his songs combine guitar-led alternative rock, indie-folk intimacy and the direct, unfinished texture of bedroom production.

His debut EP, ZDA (1), was developed during his first year in the United States and completed in the songwriting and production specialization at Berklee’s New York City campus. Its five tracks—Acts of Violent Men, Move On // Sredi Ljubljane, Try, Try, East New York and Odnesi Me—use homesickness, social observation, romantic separation and unease as material. The record is rooted in the emotional immediacy of late-1990s guitar music but avoids simple revivalism: Slovenian language, New York locations and a distinctly contemporary sense of dislocation keep the work anchored in the present.

The bilingual title Move On // Sredi Ljubljane makes that double location explicit, while Odnesi Me turns the idea of home into a plea rather than a fixed destination. Kéquetz’s authorship extends into image-making. He directed and edited the Odnesi Me video, and his developing visual identity has involved collaborators including typographer Nik Mlinarič and the Slovenian streetwear project Ghost Town.

Pronounced “ké-kats,” Kéquetz is the artist name of Jure Kekec. His music moves between indie rock, alternative rock, indie folk and singer-songwriter forms, with a grunge-influenced edge and the immediacy of bedroom production.
