Matter

Matter did not simply adapt rap to Slovenia; they constructed a parallel Slovenia inside rap. Formed in Kamnik in 2015, the group transformed private jokes, apartment-block mythology, provincial details and surreal non sequiturs into a shared cultural vocabulary. Dacho and Tunja’s voices rarely behave like conventional lead and support. Instead, they circle one another through dialogue, chant, confession and deadpan association, while sparse electronic production leaves unusual amounts of air around the words.

The video for Meduze, released in May 2015 and directed by KUKLA, announced the project before its debut album had arrived. Amphibios followed in 2016, then Mrk in 2017 and the three-part Troglav in 2018. Together, the records established Matter as one of the defining Slovenian acts of their generation: divisive, immediately recognizable and unusually successful at moving underground language into wider pop culture without smoothing out its strangeness.

Their fourth album, HAOS, appeared in 2022 as both a fifteen-track record and a 124-page hardcover book made with Emil Kozole and a wider network of visual contributors. That expansion is central to understanding Matter. The project is not only music but a system of imagery, clothing, print, video, performance and recurring characters.

The current configuration is Tunja (Matej Tunja), Dacho (Dario Nožić Serini) and producer-DJ Shao (Simeon Perich). The founding recording trio was Dacho, Tunja and Levanael (Luka Lah); public reporting in May 2025 described Shao as Levanael’s replacement.

Matter’s sound moves through alternative hip-hop, cloud rap, trap, downtempo electronics and experimental pop. Releases extend beyond recordings into film, fashion, books, visual identities and elaborate live presentation.
